Step 1: make a plan

Step 1: make a plan

This is the fun part!  Create the vision for your project.  Depending on the size and scope of your project you may need to hire an architect to draw up the plans.  In our case, we’re renovating the first floor of our home.  Approx 1,000 sqft space that will become 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, laundry room, storage & playroom. We are not making any structural changes, so instead of hiring an architect, I decided to try and create the new layout myself.  There are lots of free choices out there when it comes to home design software.  After some research I decided on Autodesk HomeStyler because the interface seemed most user friendly to me and I liked the idea of being able to create a plan in 3D, which is a really cool feature.  It took me a couple hours to play around with it to get started, but below is what I've been able to create with it so far.

The next post will get into the detail of Step 2: Creating a scope and budget.
